Reserve Keeper In Canterbury Team

The Christchurch City player, W. Weir, although only his club’s second string goalkeeper, has been selected to play for the Canterbury senior soccer team against Otago at English Park next Monday.

A Scot, Weir has so far been over-shadowed in the City team by the New Zealand under-23 representative, O Nuttridge, who will be with the national squad for the match against Scotland at Hutt on the same day that Weir makes his debut for Canterbury. However, on the Saturday, when Canterbury will meet Wellington at English Park, Weir will be a reserve again —this time to the talented young New Brighton goalkeeper, D. Phillips. Phillips will spend a remarkable Queen’s Birthday week-end. After playing for the senior team against Wellington on the Saturday, he will be in goal for the Canterbury under-20 side against Otago in the curtain-raiser on the Monday. Four Making Debuts Both goal-keepers will be making their first appearance in the Canterbury senior team, and other newcomers are the Brighton right-back, G. Davis, and the brilliant Old Boys midfield link man, B. Wilkinson., The centre-half, J. le Poidevln, returns to the senior team for the first time since he played against Wellington in September, 1961. His only representative match since that date was in the B team that played Southland in August, 1963. P. Kay and D. Torkington last played in 1965. K. France will caotain the seniors. The three Canterbury players in the national squad—Nuttridge, A. Gowans and C. Rennie—were not available for selection. In all, four representative teams were named yesterday—the two senior sides, by Mr R. C. Carter, and the under-20s and under-18s (to play Wellington in Saturday's curtainraiser) by Mr R. Storer.
