STRENGTH IN WOMEN'S INDOOR BASKETBALL

r THE strength of Canterbury women’s indoor basketball was underlined when the representative team won the annual quadrangular tournament for the Canadian Goodwill Trophy at Blenheim last Saturday for the fourth consecutive year. The team went through undefeated, beating Hutt Valley 55-48, Nelson 40-35 and Marlborough 50-34. Canterbury’s two South Island representatives, J, Baker and S. Chamberlain, were two of the most prominent players at the tournament. Mrs Baker was the top Canterbury scorer in every game. She scored 45 points. Miss Chamberlain was only slightly less prolific in her scoring. Her points total for the three games was an impressive 36.

G. McGregor played well in the guard position end wag very sound on defence. H. Hutton rebounded with great efficiency under the basket.

Hutt Valley provided Canterbury with its strongest opposition. It' played a slow, controlled type of basketball which Canterbury was unable to overcome until well on in tiie second spell. The greater accuracy in ebooting of the Canterbury players,

led by Mrs Baker in the centre, proved the deciding factor.

Against Nelson, Canterbury was slow to get on top. Nelson held the advantage until the second half when the Canterbury players ex-

erted greater pressure to take the lead and hold it Canterbury was untroubled to beat Marlborough, being superior to every departmeat.

Thlg success indicates that Canterbury, which won the New Zealand championship last season, will again be a strong force on the national scene in spite of tbs foot that it has lost several of its top players.
