NINE CARS DAMAGED
Two Accidents At Crossing Nine cars were damaged in two accidents at the intersection of Victoria street and Montreal street yesterday, but nobody was injured. About 9 a.m. five cars were involved in a concertina crash, and shortly before 4.30 p.m. four more vehicles were involved in a similar accident Traffic lights were recently installed at the intersection. The Christchurch City Council’s Traffic Superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) said last evening that about 4.30 p.m. two cars had stopped at the lights and four vehicles behind were involved in a concertina crash. Reflecting signs had been erected to warn motorists of the lights, but drivers were not taking the care needed, Mr Thomas said. The rain could have had some effect on braking but that was no excuse. Mr Thomas said that the lights, had been switched on for some days and publicity had been given to the fact that they were to be switched on. The installation of lights at the intersection had been given high priority in the hqpe that the accident rate there would fall, and also to give some security to people using the intersection.
