Russia Seeking ‘Package Deal’

(N.Z. Press Association— Copyright)

MOSCOW, May 26.

The Soviet Union will exert her influence to try to calm tensions in the Middle East but rejects a Big Four summit approach to the crisis, highlyplaced sources say in Moscow.

Although the Kremlin has given vigorous support to the Arabs, officials have let it be known that the Soviet Government has no interest in a Middle East war.

United Press International, however, said Russia wants a “package deal” in which a Kremlin peace bid in. the Middle East would be linked with a reduction of American activity in Vietnam. The Russian attitude encouraged some optimism in diplomatic circles after Russia’s refusal in the

Security Council on Wednesday to join Western nations in framing a peace resolution.

At the same time it was reported that United Arab Republic’s War Minister, Mr Shamseddin Badran, had arrived in Moscow with a 10man delegation for talks with Soviet military and political leaders.

the Minister, whose visit was announced in Cairo only a few hours before, was presumed to be canvassing for promises of a bigger flow of Soviet military aid should war break out.
