Overseas Interest In N.Z. Minerals
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 25. About 30 overseas geologists, representing 23 organisations made mineral investigations in New Zealand in the 1966-67 field season, the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) said in Parliament today.
A weekly average of between two and three overseas mining and petroleum exploration companies had sent staff to New Zealand to investigate the prospects of mineral wealth, he said. Mr Shelton was replying on behalf of the Minister of Science (Mr Taiboys) to Mr E. S. F. Holland (Nat., Fendalton). “Since the publication of the report of the Mineral Resources Committee in 1963 and the subsequent action taken on its recommendations by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Mines Department, plus
the recent taxation incentives, a more attractive climate has been created for mineral exploration," Mr Shelton said. “This is already reaping the rewards of greatly increased mineral investigation, especially by overseas companies,” be said.
