UNDERFED CHILDREN
‘More Than Expected’ (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 25. There appeared to be more malnutrition in young children in the Auckland district than expected, says the Auckland Medical Research Foundation. This conclusion could be drawn from the first six months of work in a project financed by the foundation with part of a gift from the Sir John Logan Campbell trustees.
The report says malnutrition was present in 180 children admitted to the Princess Mary children’s ward at the Auckland Hospital in six months.
A study after the children returned to their homes showed that a large percentage failed to maintain the improvement in weight they began while in hospital. The project will be continued for a year.
