TO LEAD KIWIS
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The experienced Auckland inside-back, J. D. Ellwood, has been awarded the captaincy of the New Zealand Rugby League team to play Riverina in the second match of the Kiwis’ Australian tour, on Sunday. Ellwood has led the CityNewton team with some success in the Auckland premier grade competition. He and R. W. Bailey, the Auckland centre, who will not play his first game until next week, could be the chief claimants for controlling the backs in the important games to come. B. E. Castle, the Auckland ✓ loose forward, who plays In the first game against Newcastle on Saturday, has already been named as the tour captain, but in the event of him losing form, he might be displaced by another player for matches in which he takes part.
Castle has not been chosen for the Riverina fixture. The team manager, Mr C. R. Mountford, said yesterday after the last training run In New Zealand, that every player was now fit. All Mr Mountford could say about the Kiwis* first game, against Newcastle, was that “Newcastle Is the graveyard of touring teams.” Because the Kiwis are amateur players all the money earned from television and radio interviews in Australia will be put into an entertainment fund.
