Bar Hours Vote
The bar hours referendum paper suggested to Parliament yesterday would offer voters a poor choice. Mr Hanan’s admission that Government members are not unanimous on the proposal leaves room to hope that it will be improved by the time the Statutes Revision Committee has heard submissions and Parliament has considered the committee’s recommendations. Whatever the outcome, the proposed choice would entrench the worst feature of New Zealand drinking habits—the “six “o’clock swill”. A more useful alternative to a vote for six-o’clock closing would be: “ I vote for the “fixing of bar hours by the Licensing Commission, “ without any increase in the hours of sale and with “closing not later than 10 p.m.”. A majority vote for this option would give expression to the strong desire for reform, would set a general limit to change, and would permit regard for differing local needs.
