ADDINGTON MARKET Strong Demand For Hereford Heifer Calves

Values for best quality steer and heifer calves were a little stronger at the Addington store stock market yesterday. Heifer calves, in particular, met a very good sale, Herefords selling to £24 ss.

The adult cattle entry was a very mixed selection, but pens of even quality steers and cows were firm.

The store sheep entry was again a very small one. Both the ewe and wether lamb sections included some wellgrown' and attractive Romneys, and considering the time of the year, they met a fair sale.

'Small lots predominated in the adult sheep section, which was very ragged and nondescript There was no buying interest from farmers, and passings were regular. The store sheep entry numbered 2325, compared with 2065 last week. It comprised 785 ewe lambs, 1235 wether lambs, 145 adult ewes, and 160 wethers. The store cattle entry declined from 1070 to 980. It comprised 290 heifer calves, 395 steer calves, and 295 adult cattle. Store Lambs Romneys predominated In the small entry of store lambs. While a fair gallery followed the market, the sale was not a strong one at any stage. However, there was still a fair Inquiry for the better class of lamb, with freezing buyers com-

peting for any which were in killable condition.

The wether lamb entry comprised a fair selection of both shorn and woolly Romneys. With one exception values continued at very modest levels. Average quality shorn Romneys sold from 35s to 37s 6d, with smaller down to 32s fid.

Values for Romneys in the wool were much the same, although a draft from the Pen* insula met good competition, with values ranging from 45s to 495. Halfbreds sold to 365, and some Down cross at 39s 6d.

With some exceptions values for the ewe lambs were little better than freezing price. Top price of the day was 56s for some Romneys, and there were other sales of Romneys at 43s to 535. Shorn Romneys, however, met a fairly hard sale, with values ranging from 34s to 41s. A small entry of flnewoolled ewe lambs sold to 47s 6d for the best, and the remainder sold from 39s to 435. Sales of store lambs included: Wether lambs: Eva Price Partnership (Poranui), 285 RomneyCorriedales at 45s to 495; A. L. Fraser (Pigeon Bay), 61 shorn Romneys at 365. ,„ E Y e I J x ambs: J- H. Harris (Halswell), 54 Romneys at 565.

Adult Sheep The adult sheep entry was a very ragged end-of-season selection, and there was no buyer Interest from farmers. Practically the whole of the entry was passed, the only sales at auction being to freezing companies where ewes were killable. The entry included several lots of two-tooth wethers, but all were passed at 39s to 43s 6d, and a pen of small twotooth ewes was passed at 365. A pen of old ewes was sold at 16s, but another pen from the same vendor could not find a buyer at Ils. Store Cattle This week's store calf yarding of almost 700 head included a bigger proportion of plain lots, and very few pens of top quality calves. The best of the entry met a very good sale, with values 20s or so stronger than last week. The medium and small calves, however, were a little harder selling, and values were firm to 20s a head easier. The feature of the market was the good sale which prevailed for heifer calves, with a pen of Herefords selling at £24 ss. A range of calf values is:— m? 00d Q ua Mty steer calves, to £23, with an odd sale to £25; average £lB 10s to £2O 10s, and smaller from £l4 to £lB. Best heifer calves, to £2l 10s, with odd sales to £24 10s; average to good £l5 to £l7, with smaller from £ll 10s to £l4 10s. The adult cattle entry was a very mixed selection, but it included a few pens of useful steers and station cows. A fairsized gallery followed the sale, and the more attractive pens of cows and steers could be quoted as firm.

The best of the adult steers sold from £3B 10s to £4l, with others down to £36. Smaller steers sold from £24 10s to £3O, and heifers aged 18 to 20 months from £2O 'to £23 10s.
