SEVEN IN BALLOT
Sportsman Award (N.Z. Frets Association) WELLINGTON. Seven men have been nominated for the New Zealand Universities “Sportsman of the year” award. The winner will be chosen at a function in Wellington at the week-end. The nominees are: JL E. Jones (Canterbury), crosscountry; R. Joyce (Victoria), rowing; C. R. Laidlaw (Otago), Rugby; L. Chiat (Victoria), badminton; V. Pollard (Massey), cricket; P. Walker (Auckland), yachting; H. Waterhouse (Victoria), table tennis. Pollard, instrumental in New Zealand’s first victory in almost 60 years of cricket with Australia, is favourite to win the award. Last weekend, he was named as Palmerston North’s “sportsman of the year.” Joyce, a member of the Hutt Valley crew which won the national fours rowing championship earlier this year, and Laidlaw, the All Black half-back, are also considered possible winners. Although Jones gained bis nomination for cross-country running, he is the current national three-mile track champion. Waterhouse was a member of the team which competed overseas recently at the world table tennis championships. Chiat is highly ranked in badminton, and Walker is a dominant figure in national yachting. The award was won last year by the Commonwealth 3000 metres steeplechase gold medallist, R. P. Welsh (Otago).
