Leading Teams Are Tested

Both the leading teams, Hoon Hay and Riccarton, had to fight hard to win their matches dur* ing the fifth round of the winter table tennis competition last evening. Selwyn 11, which has played well in recent weeks, has yet to score a point, but solid play by W. T. Scott and good support by Miss V. E. Braumann and J. Flint severely tested a casual Hoon Hay side. Miss Braumann surprisingly beat M. R. Spinks, 21-19, 15-21, 21-15.

In spite of J. Armstrong showing excellent early season form to win all his singles. Riccarton was very lucky to beat Dallington. A. Alabaster (Riccarton) had an indifferent evening, winning only one singles match.

D. T. Mcßride (Dallington) played very ably to beat Alabaster in three matches. He has played well this season, but lacked real finish.

Linwood I was too consistent for Selwyn I. Its leading player, G. W. Makinson. showed he will be a strong contender for Canterbury selection by beating V. N. Brightwell in three sets, and winning his other matches comfortably. He played well to beat H. P. Holt, 21-19, 21-13.
