E.E.C. ENTRY Bonn Urges Fair Chance For U.K.

BONN, May 24.
The West German Finance Minister, Mr Franz Josef Strauss, yesterday urged that Britain should be given a fair chance to disprove President de Gaulle’s reservations about its admission to the Common Market.
He said that Britain must prove it is willing to accept the consequences of closer ties with Europe, while the Common Market itself must not be diluted. Mr Strauss suggested that association could be an interim solution to get things moving, but the goal of full British membership should not be lost from view.
An ardent supporter of close Franco-German relations, he added that Britain’s
application to join the Common Market must be carefully examined by the Community. “The British must show the cut of their cloth. They must prove whether they really are ready to accept the .consequences of closer ties and membership in free Europe,” he said. British entry would increase Europe's political weight, Mr Strauss said. “But the condition is—the British must join in completely."
