Sewer For Belfast
Sir,—ln reply to “J.1.M.,” I have seen small children eating the ice in the gutters. Should innocent children who do not know what filth flows down there be put in peril of typhoid and other sickness? Belfast is within six miles of Christchurch. It has two major freezing works and hygiene is essential at the highest standard. It is absurd that we have to put up with the filth that surrounds us every day. The effluent from the freezing works seems to be the stumbling-block for the sewerage of Belfast.— Yours, etc., JUNE. May 24, 1967.
Sir,—The chief engineer of the Christchurch Drainage Board tells us that the board has . engaged consultants to carry out a study of sewage disposal, for, inter alia, the Belfast area. We older residents of Belfast are getting rather tired of the continuing delay in doing anything at all about- this important matter. For over 20 years we have
been told that the sewer was coming, but it seems to be as far away as ever. Cr. Don appears to be a voice crying in the wilderness.—Yours, etc., PONTIFEX. May 24, 1967.
