RACING Whakamoa And Town Guard Likely To Race Well Today

“Th* Preu" Special Service AUCKLAND. It will come as a great surprise if Whakamoa and Town Guard run poorly in the President’s Handicap, the first leg of the TA.B. double at the Maramarua Hunt’s meeting at Pukekohe today.

Both have excellent form credentials. None of their dozen or so rivals have done nearly so well lately.

Town Guard’s last five starts have brought him two wins and a third. Whakamoa has gained five minor placings from his last six outings.

Whakamoa, at his last start, finished fourth over 10 furlongs, at Marton on May 1. Previously he had been fifth aver seven furlongs at Te Awamutu, third behind Town Guard and Honestly in the Stars Travel Gold Cup; and second, beaten a head, to Pell Mell in the Tauranga Cup. When third in the Stars Travel Gold Cup, Whakamoa carried 7-9. Town Guard’s weight was 7-3. Today Whakamoa win meet his rival on 91b better terms.

Town Guard, which is prepared on the course by F. D. Hill, beat Golden Guy by a length in the Ta Timi Kara Handicap, over 11 furlongs, at Otaki on May 13, carrying 7-8, 121 b less than he has today. His other win was three starts earlier at Tauranga. Both Whakamoa and Town Guard race best when the pace is strong. Regal Ruler is bound to string out the field early.

Anne Lane, which will be ridden by R. J. Skelton, Blockade, and Sue Paul may do best of the others.

Fair Effort Anne Lane, finished eighth in the President’s Handicap, over 11 furlongs, at Te Rapa last Saturday. That was her first start at a distance since resuming from a spell, so it was a fair effort. Last winter she looked a middle-distance runner of good promise. Sue Paul will come into favour if the track becomes heavy, conditions which suit her Ideally. Bottle Top, a five-year-old gelding from W. W. Townsend’s successful Cambridge stable, may take the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Bottle Top, after he had ted at the furlong, weakened to sixth in the Stewards’ Handicap over seven furlongs, at Te Rapa on May 13. Meanwhile, according to reports, he has thrived.

At his previous start Bottle Top was narrowly beaten by Royal Fair over six furlongs at Te Aroha. Those have been his only starts since coming back into work, so he should be improving all the time. Sonya’s Pride, Royal Fair, Bostock, a stablemate of Town Guard, and Blue Baron are all certain to have their supporters. Blue Baron sprinted Well enough at Takanini on Monday to make him one of the hardest to beat
