High School Roll Prospects

There will be sufficient places in Christchurch secondary schools next year to accommodate all pupils applying, but some may not get into the school of their first choice. This situation, which has applied for some years, is reported in a statement on enrolments issued by all the State school boards after a meeting of principals, convened by the district senior inspector of secondary schools (Mr F. N. Wylde). Applications for enrolment will close on Friday, June 30. Enrolment forms will be available from Christchurch secondary schools this week. As a guide to parents the following statement was issued jointly by the schools: “Parents of pupils seeking enrolment at State secondary schools next year ate advised to study the courses offering at secondary schools and make application for enrolment at the school’ of their choice. This application must be made on the school’s application form and should reach the school concerned by Friday, June 30, 1967. “Although it is likely that some pupils will not be accommodated at the school applied for, parents can be as- 1 sured that there will be suffi- ' cient places for all pupils in 1 Christchurch secondary 1 schools. ■ “Some time will be needed ; after June 30 for co-ordina- 1 tion of enrolments within the ' conditions set down by each 1 board for the admission of pupils. On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 19, notices will be sent to all parents who have applied informing them whether their application has been successful or not

“If for any reason an application for enrolment at a school has not been accepted, parents will then have the opportunity of making application at another school. A list of schools where there are still vacancies will be supplied. This second application must be made by Tuesday, August 1. “To facilitate enrolments parents are requested to enrol promptly. Last year some parents delayed enrolling their children and were surprised because rolls were

closed in some schools. A few parents did not enrol their children at all.

“Pupils are required by law to be at school at least until their fifteenth birthday, whatever time of the year that falls. No employer may employ a child under the age of 15. There is now provision for prosecution where children under 15 are kept away from school or employed illegally. “Christchurch parents are fortunate in the secondary schools available for their children. All schools offer a good range of courses to senior levels, all are well staffed, and in all high standards are reached. They can rest assured that their children will receive a good education in whichever school they are enrolled.”
