Comeback By Eye Liner
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A ) BRISBANE. Interest in the £BOOO Stradbroke Handicap—first leg of the Brisbane winter double—quickened after three of the top fancies had run slashing trials in a five-furlong sprint at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The local mare. Eye Liner, whose big race preparation has been hampered by injury, gave a great display to win the Lightning Handicap in a grim finish against a top class field. Eye Liner (7/1) won by a head from the New Zealand-bred three-year-old, Baltic Boy (11/2), with Mister Hush (7/1) a head away third. Eye Liner, which had not won a race for 12 month*, ran the distance in 58.6 sec, one-tenth of a second outside the course record.
The win shot the mart, which became known as Australia's greatest filly as a two-year-old in 1964-65, when she won nine races from 10 starts, right back into Stradbroke calculations.
But Baltic Boy and Mister Hush also ran great Stradbroke trials, and the market is tightening for the big sprint, which will be run at Eagle Farm on June 10.
