Smith Now Has Nine

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SAN JOSE. The American sprinter, T. Smith, broke the world records for the 400 metres and 440 yards on Saturday, Associated Press reported. Smith was clocked at 44.5 sec in the 400 metres and at 44.8 sec for 440 yards at a San Jose athletics meeting. The previous 400 metres mark of 44.95ec was set by O. Davis (U.S.) in the 1960 Rome Olympic Games. It was equalled by two more Americans, A. Plummer in 1963, and M. Larrabee in 1964. The 22-year-old Smith, who now holds or shares nine world records for distances from 200 metres to 440 yards, said his aim now was to crack the 100 yards (9.lsec) and 100 metres (lOsec) marks. The sprinter’s coach, Bud Winter, said the performance today was “one of the all-time greatest single events in sports history.”
