New Brighton Play Attractively
NEW BRIGHTON 20: R. Pierce, C. Smith scored tries; G. Hobson kicked four penalties and one conversion. UNIVERSITY B 13: P. James, M. Hamilton scored tries; B. Prestidge kicked two conversions and one penalty. New Brighton did not look like losing against University B at Jellicoe Park, but University provided some good attacking Rugby in the second half. New Brighton led 11-3 at halftime and then went further in
front with three penalties by Hobson and led by 20 points to 3 at this stage. University B came back with two converted tries late in the second half to reduce the deficit. New Brighton played a good brand of Rugby, with the powerful forward pack taking control up front and the back-line running hard and straight, and passing crisply. The only aspect of New
Brighton’s play that could be faulted was the tackling of the forwards. On numerous occasions the speedy University forwards broke through rucks and line-outs. I. H. Penrose, K. Tanner, G. Wilkins and D. Dalton all had good games in the Brighton pack. C. Smith set up many of his side’s attacking movements with some fine intelligent play. R. Pierce and G. Hobson had good games in the backs. University played a little too
loosely in the forwards to be able to hold the opposition. M Hamilton, R. Mahan, Strachan and M. Beveridge all played hard, honest games. Of the backline P. James and B. Kerr were speedy wings, while R. Anderson played well at centre. B. R. Prestidge spoilt a good display at first fiveeighths by continually disputing the referee’s rulings. Referee: Mr K. Osbourne.
