Old Boys’ Backs In Form
H. 5.0.8 24: A. G. Steed (2), M. J. Millar, L. G. Legge, M. Brown tries; Millar kicked three conversions and a penalty LINCOLN COLLEGE 15: M. A. Goddard, A. McLellan, J. F. Wilson tries; A. C. Warren kicked three conversdone. Using their backs successfully and attractively, Old Boys scored a decisive win over Lincoln College, which has yet to win a match this season. The tackling by both teams left a lot to be desired at times but these lapses did enable attacking movements to flourish. T. L. Mehr tens, at first fiiveeighths for Old Boys, was the outstanding player on the field. He initiated many of the Old Boys’ movements, his handling was impeccable- and be was always a danger to Lincoln with his straight, hard running. Old Boys held the advantage in the first spell, as their forwards gained a good share of possession and the half-back, R. Marks, was able to set his backline moving at every oppor-
tunity with long, well-directed passes. The back-line looked dangerous on many occasions but was often unable to finish off its movements because of lapses in handling or passing. Lincoln made several rushes on the right flank with the winger, N. G. Gow, prominent in some crashing runs. Apart from Mehrtens, M. Brown and M. Gregg were the most impressive Old Boys backs. The former was always dangerous on attack, and Gregg, at full-back, did a lot of useful work on defence. The Old Boys forwards tended to play a little loosely. M. Millar was sound in the tight and K. Hill was the best of the loose forwards.
G. Rowsell was a competent half-back for Lincoln. A. McLellan played a grand game at prop. He was never far from the ball and made several, powerful runs. He was rewarded with an excellent try. Referee: Mr A. G. Duckmanton.
