Group Tap-dancing Praised

The group tap-dancing was excellent, said the ballet and tap-dancing judge (Mrs C. Aslin, of Wellington) after the fourth day of the Christchurch Competitions Society’s competitions yesterday. Mrs Aslin said she would like more patterns created on the stage in the solo tap dances but the tapping and rhythm were very good indeed. Mrs B. Broadbelt, the national dancing judge, said the eight and under 10 standard was not as high as she expected, but all the other classes were above average. The senior classes were especially good. The Christchurch Civic Music Council Scholarship of £5O was jointly won by Julie White (’cello) and Michael Monaghan (violin). The piano and violin judge (Mr K. R. Newson) said he was disappointed with the small number of entries but those who played were of a good standard. The George Russell Memorial Fund scholarship for the most promising boy performer in the instrumental sections under *lB was won by Martin Lamb. Mr Newson, said that the winner showed great versatility, having good keyboard technique and a fine facility for controlling graduation of tone. The boys’ voices he had heard were generally better than those of the girls, said the speech judge (Mr G. J. D. Hooper). More control was needed. The humourous recitation sections were disappointing as many were trying too hard. Yesterday’s results were:— National Dancing Highland Fling.—Under eight: Heather Henderson 1, Lynda Bootherstone 2.
