DRUM AND BUGLE TEAM

The Fleet Marine Force Pacific Drum and Bugle Team, which will be in Christchurch next Monday and Tuesday, is a precision musical organisation which has played throughout the Pacific in the last 14 years.

Since its formation at San Diego, California, in December, 1952, the team of 25 has visited Australia, Thailand, Japan, the western Philippines, and most places between. It has also toured the western United States.

i Although the team lists 25 ■ members, only 21 musicians > and the drum major take part , in the precision drill. The ■ other men stand by in case ; of illness. Instruments used I are 15 bugles, five drums and a cymbal.

The team’s repertoire ranges from marches to musical comedy. Included in the list are more than 30 tunes from musicals and films. All are played from memory because the intricacies of the precision drill makes it impossible to carry sheet music.

The drill used by the team lasts 20 minutes and includes 10 musical selections. The team will be seen in Christchurch at 1 p.m. on May 16 when it marches from King Edward Barracks to Latimer square where it will give a demonstration of marching and counter-march-ing.
