Juniors Play Good Tennis

"The Press" Special Service INVERCARGILL. Six Canterbury tennis players are making their presence felt in a tournament at Riversdale. F. Versteg has been particularly impressive, winning both his under-16 and under-19 matches by good margins. Miss B. Nurse also played well and was unlucky to lose. She led 3-0 and was hitting winners all over the court, but fell into error and lost a close match, 9-6. There are 75 children taking part in the tournament, held under the control of the Southland professional, N. Hoskin, and with the former champion, Mrs Ruia Davy, in attendance.

Mrs Davy, present at the invitation of Hoskin, is conducting coaching classes throughout the tournament. Results of games involving Canterbury players are:— Under-lS Boys' Singles.—First round: T. Versteg <C.) beat T. Proctor (1.), 9-3: K. Lewis (C.) beat I. Goodsir (S.), 9-3; I. Leckle (C.) lost to A. Stewart <S.), 9-2. Second round: Lewis beat N. Baker (S.), 9-0. Under-16 Girls’ Singles.—First round: Miss K. Davey (C.) beat Miss A. Powell (S.), 9-0. Second round: Miss Davey lost to Miss D. Ferguson (S.), 9-5. Under-19 Boys’ Singles.—First round: Lewis lost to B. Stewart (S.), 9-6; Versteg beat G. Collins <S.). 9-1. Under-19 Girls’ Singles.—Second round: Miss B. Nurse <C.) tost to Miss C. Matbison (S.), 9-6. Miss B. Welham will play in the under-19 girls’ singles this morning.
