Efforts To Save Oak

(N.Z. Press Association) KAIKOHE, May 8. Efforts are being made to preserve the life of the Waima Mission oak tree, described as the largest of its species in New Zealand. Members of the Hoklanga Development Committee are perturbed at the deteriorating condition of the tree, which has a breadth-high girth of 27ft, a height of 89ft and a canopy spread of 130 ft. The committee’s secretary, Mr A. C. Price, told today’s meeting of the committee any drainage scheme for the tree could be incorporated in a major drainage scheme for the surrounding land. “If drainage will preserve the tree, it should be undertaken immediately,” he said.
