Jews Fear Nazism In South Africa

JOHANNESBURG, May 8.

Thousands of Jews gathered in a Johannesburg cemetery yesterday in memory of the six million Jewish victims of Hitler’s Germany amid growing apprehension at signs of neo-Nazism and anti-Semitism in South Africa.

Dr. Terry Schneider, president of the South African Jewish board of deputies, told the crowd the Jewish community was concerned at signs of rising Nazism in South Africa. These “rumbles of Nazism” had recently shown brazen and unashamed manifestations, he said. Tension had risen after a series of incidents after celebrations for Hitler’s birthday held by a crowd of German Immigrants at a Johannesburg beer hall last month.

Young Jews patrolled the cemetery during yesterday’s remembrance ceremony after reports the German immigrants planned a demonstration. Dr. Schneider told the crowd he did not blame any German immigrants with feelings of anti-semitism, but they should be told South Africa did not want them and would not tolerate them. The last incident at the beer hall was on Friday when police used tear-gas, batons

and dogs to clear the area, after disturbances involving Jewish youths.

Police searched the beer hall after two newspapers received anonymous telephone calls that it would be dynamited.

The German Embassy and leaders of the Jewish community have deplored the brawls. The Press attache at the West Germany Embassy in Pretoria, Dr. G. Braumueller, said “one should certainly not give too much importance to a small crowd of irresponsible

youths,” adding that most involved In the brawls were too young to have consciously experienced national socialism.
