Change In Site Of Taxi Stand Opposed

An objection to a proposal to change the site of the Lyttelton taxi stand has been made by a hotelkeeper, Mr A. Scott, of the Canterbury Hotel.

In a letter to the Lyttelton Borough Council, read at Monday night’s meeting, Mr Scott said he viewed the change with much concern.

Even at the present site, diagonally across the road from the hotel, the noise of taxi radio-telephones at night was disturbing to hotel guests and the behaviour of some folk waiting for taxis left much to be desired, he said. His patrons would be inconvenienced by being unable to park near the hotel. A letter from Kiwi Taxis, Ltd, supported the proposed change from outside the Railways Department building to near the Canterbury Hotel site. The present location had four problems—lack of shelter, difficulty in entering taxis because of the road slope, access across a busy intersection and an obstructed view of traffic travelling along Gladstone quay. The matter was referred to the traffic committee.

Dredge Smoke;—The Lyttelton Harbour Board has informed the council that it hopes to sell the dredge Canterbury and that it will endeavour to reduce the smoke nuisance from other plant owned by the board to a minimum.

Grants.—The council approved a grant of £lO to the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club and £l2 10s to the Pan Pacific Arts Festival. A request of £5O from the Lyttelton Lions Club towards the cost of construction of the new St John Ambulance

garage in London street, shortly to be opened, was also granted. Traffic Control.—According to the Lyttelton traffic officer’s report for April there was some overloading by heavy vehicles in the port but it had been difficult to find an area of level road in which to carry out weighings.
