ADELAIDE CUP

N.Z.-Breds Dominate

(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) ADELAIDE. New Zealand-bred stayers appear to have a stranglehold on the £NZBOOO Adelaide Cup, which will be run over two miles at Morphetville today. Eight of the 12 final acceptors were bred in New Zealand and all eight figure in the first 10 horses quoted in early markets. The leading South Australian trainer J. B. Cummings, who has had incredible success with New Zealand-bred stayers, has two horses in today’s race, Fulmen and the three-year-old, Swift General.

In spite of his great turf record, Cummings has never won an Adelaide Cup, and he is hoping that either Fulmen or Swift General will compensate for his five minor placings in the last eight years. Fulmen (Le Filou-Dulcie), which was an unlucky second to Prince Camillo in last year’s race, is a clear 10/9 favourite in the early market, and appears well weighted with 8-4.

Swift General (AgricolaFroth) proved his ability over the distance when he won the Duke of Norfolk Stakes at Flemington in March, and he showed he is still in good form by winning last week’s S.A.J.C. St. Leger.

The other New Zealand-bred starters are the top-weight, Te Parae, Baleno, Hunting Horn which won the race in 1965 and was also successful in the Port Adelaide Cup, the S.A. Derby and the S.A. St. Leger, Sir Wynyard, which was third last year, Goldtime and John’s Joy. The field.—Te Parae (R. Cox) 8-10, Sir Wynyard (D. Kelly) 8-5, Fulmen (R. Higgins) 8-4, Swift General (J. Miller) 8-0, Floodbird (N. Mifflin 7-12, Baleno (P. Hyland) 7-11, Hunting Horn (M. Dempsey) 7-9, Goldtime (G. Callow) 7-8, John’s Joy (J. Stocker) 7-4, Polly Perfect (J. Letts) 7-4, Beau Madigan (L. Rudland) 7-3, Rona (C. Bartolo) 7-3.
