RACING POINT DUTY TO WIN AGAIN

Linred Steeples Fancy Today

Point Duty started his five-year-old racing last August with a win on a soft track at Carterton. He has since established his versatility with wins on firm tracks, the latest of them in the Gloaming Stakes Handicap at Trentham last Saturday.

That win assured him of favouritism for the Waterloo Handicap at Trentham today, and an easing of the track in the last 36 hours has not weakened his position.

AU the same, the change to easier footing has tended to raise hopes for some of Point Duty’s rivals, and not the least of them are the South Island-owned pair, Court Belle and Manana. The Waterloo Handicap is the first leg of today’s TA.B. double. The second leg, the Port Nicholson Handicap, looks one of the most difficult races on the programme. Several will need aU the luck that is going in an oversized field from the seven furlongs. W. D. Skelton, who rides the fancied Woodville mare, Min Flicka, will, if there is further rain today, probably feel he has most to fear from Gus, another of his regular mounts. The leading jockey, R. J.

Skelton, will ride Gus, one of the stars of the winter racing at Trentham last year. Glamis Lad, Pharasal and Her Pal will run for Canterbury stables in the Port Nicholson Handicap. If the ground is soft or worse Glamis Lad will not be one of the lesser lights. The successful Takaninl light-weight, B. F. Andrews, is expected to ride Glamis Lad today. This was a successful combination over seven fur-

longs at the last Wellington winter meeting. Two South Island-owned, Otaki-trained horses with bright chances in other races today are Linred and Kalott. The Dunedin-owned Linred is top-weight and likely favourite for the Newton Steeplechase, and the Christ-church-owned Kalott will be one of the stronger chances In the Oriental Hack Handicap after winning the Miramar Handicap on Saturday.
