Queen Of Furrow

A Queen of the Furrow contest will be one of the special attractions at the 14th World Ploughing Contest and New Zealand ploughing championships at Preb-bleton-Broadfleld this week. Various ploughing associations have sponsored entries for the contest which is expected to attract young women from all parts of the country. The main prize is a holiday trip to Australia. The contest Is open to young women between the ages of .18 and 25 years who have some connexion with farming. They will be judged on general knowledge, speech, personality and deportment. Because one of the major sponsors of the contest is the Wool Board the entrants will be required to parade in woollen garments. There will be four judges who will represent the New Zealand Wool Board, the New Zealand Ploughing Association, the Atlantic Union Oil Company and Qantas. This evening the entrants will be interviewed about their backgrounds and interests. At the world ploughing contest the Queen of the Furrow contest will be held in three parts. The preliminary judging will begin tomorrow. The top 20 young women will then go into the semi-final on Friday and fhe top 10 will compete in the final on Saturday. One of the first public duties of the “Queen” will be to unveil the Cairn of Peace late on Saturday afternoon after the end of the

world ploughing contest, in the presence of the Gov-ernor-General, Sir Bernard Fergusson. The prize for the winner will be a trip to Australia. She will attend the special international ploughing match which Is being held at Wangaratta in Victoria on May 20, in which overseas competitors in the world contest and those from New Zealand will take part. She will then go on a 10-day tour, taking in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. She will fly to Melbourne on a Qantas flight and return by courtesy of the same airline and her travel and accommodation in Australia are being provided by the Atlantic Union Oil Company. The “Queen” receives a wardrobe of clothes and £5O spending money. This is being provided by the Wool Board with the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association in Christchurch being associated with the board in the provision of the wardrobe. The second place winner wins a week’s holiday for two at Te Anau by courtesy of the Tourist Hotel Corporation, with free return travel and spending money provided by the New Zealand Ploughing Association. The third prize consists of Max Factor cosmetics, and the fourth and fifth prizes are hair driers supplied by Zip industries.
