Cairn Of Peace

AN important function will be held on the world contest site after the cessation of ploughing on Saturday afternoon. It will be the unveiling of the Cairn of Peace, which will permanently mark the site of the 14th World Ploughing Contest in New Zealand. The erection of a cairn on the world contest site is part of the traditional practice associated with these contests.

The cairn has been designed by Paul Pascoe and Linton and has been built by a Christchurch stonemason, Mr L. Robertson, with the modelling for the bronze work being done by Mr C. Dunn. It incorporates individual stones from each of the competing countries set in Halswell blue stone.

The unveiling ceremony will follow soon after the end of the world contest It is timed to start at 2.30 p.m. on the contest site. The cairn will be later transferred to its permanent site at the corner of Robinsons and Springs roads. For the ceremony the flags of the countries taking part in the match will be flying and competitors and team

managers will be standing beside the flagpoles with the flags of their respective countries. The president of the World Ploughing Organisation, Mr W. Feuerlein, and the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Fergusson, will

make speeches after which the Governor-General, accompanied by Monsignor J. T. Liddy and the Queen of the Furrow, will proceed to the cairn where, at the request of the Governor-Gen-eral, the Queen of the Furrow will unveil the cairn. The cairn will be dedicated by Monsignor Liddy and the lowering of flags will then follow.
