U.S. CAR FIRMS

Attack By Economist (NJ. Preet Assn. —Copyright) MELBOURNE, May 9. The United States car industry had for 50 years refused to accept responsibility for death and injury caused by cars, the New York economist, Charles Silverman, told the International Congress of Human Relations in Melbourne today. He said this was the most striking case of the industry’s failure to accept responsibility for its own innovation. “There is little question that the number of injuries and deaths resulting from automobile accidents could be substantially reduced by redesigning cars to make them safer,” Mr Silverman said.

“This la now being done under the compulsion of law. What is incomprehensible is not simply that the auto companies refused to redesign cars on their own but that they continue to keep on the road cars with serious design failures—-for example, faulty brakes.”
