SERIOUS LOSS FOR MEN'S BASKETBALL

QNE of Canterbury’s most prominent men’s basketball players, M. Askew, will not be available for the provincial team this season and will not be turning out for his club, University much longer either. He will shortly leave on the first leg of an overseas trip which will take him away from Christchurch for about 12 months. This is a considerable blow for the Canterbury selector - coach (Mr L. N. Saunders), already troubled by the nonavailability of players. But it is even a greater set-back to the Canterbury University coach (Mr A. Forrester) who will be selecting the New Zealand Universities side later this season.

Askew has represented New Zealand Universities on several occasions and last season was chosen as its captain. This high honour was fully deserved after his outstanding displays in the universities tournament and later, as a Canterbury representative, in the New

Zealand Men’s Basketball Association’s national tournament.

Although he originally came from Nelson to attend university in 1964, Askew made his greatest impact on basketball in Christchurch. He played only one season of serious -basketball before he came to Christchurch and was playing A grade for University in his first season here.

The following year he made tremendous progress to win a place in the Canterbury representative team for the first time. He also represented Canterbury last year and would have been certain of a place this season had he been available. As a member of the University A team this season, Askew has been the most prolific scorer in the A grade competition. In five games he has scored 51 points. His absence in later games could affect University A’s chances of retaining both the local inter-club championship and the New Zealand Universities title it won last season.

Fortunately, he plans to return next year to complete his degree and will no doubt continue his basketball career where he left off. He is currently a member of the Canterbury Men’s Basketball Association’s executive committee and is responsible for referee appointments.
