Eight Canterbury Women In S.I. Hockey Trials

(CANTERBURY, the premier women's hockey province in New Zealand, is very well represented in the trials to select the national team to compete in the international tournament in Germany later this year. The team will leave New Zealand early in September and arrive in Belgium on September 8. On September 11 the tournament begins at Leverkusen in Germany and concludes 14 days later. After this the team will make a comprehensive tour of England and Scotland. A one month tour of the United States has also been proposed, with a possible stopover in Canada. The North Island trials are at Palmerston North on Saturday and the South Island trials at Ashburton on May 20. The final trials will be held at Wellington during Queen’s Birthday week-end. The eight Canterbury trial ists, all of whom are experienced Canterbury and South Island representatives, are:— Miss H. Walker (RawhiU), a former New Zealand representative, who has represented Canterbury and the South Island on numerous occasions between 1956 and 1966. She is a prolific goalscorer, a tireless backtackler and she is capable of extremely effective switches of play to the right flank, a vital role for a left inner. Miss B. Makinson (Digbys) hag also represented New Zealand and she has played for Canterbury on many occasions between 1955 and 1966. She has also been a South Island representative on five occasions. She is -an extremely reliable goalkeeper, rarely being drawn out of position, while her blocking and clearing are both well-timed and powerful. Mis® S. Comer (Carlton) is a former New Zealand Ungtefsities’ representative an* has -NXU. blues from 1955-57. She has also represented Canterbury and the South Island many tim* Sbe ta the outstand, mg centre half in New See- ; land, possessing very dose sticfcwort, speed and anticipation on coyer defence.- Pos-' Msefc are 'ery sound trapping and extremeiy accurate passing, , Miss A. McKenna (Univer-

sity) has represented New Zealand Universities and received N.Z.U. blues from 1962-5. She has also represented Canterbury and the South Island during this period. She is a most versatile player being equally at home in any of the halfback positions. She is also a very sound back. Her main assets are accurate trapping and passing and sound positional play, particularly on cover-defence. Miss M. Bruhns (Carlton) represented Eastern Southland 1960-4, Canterbury 1965-6 and the South Island in 1963. She is a sound back who tackles decisively, covers well and is the possessor of a very powerful and accurate clearing hit. Miss J. Davies (Aranul) has represented Canterbury as a centre forward since 1962. She played for the South Island in 1965. She is a tireless backtackler, distributes the ball well to her other forwards and shows speed and anticipation in and near the circle. Miss L. Rutledge (Harewood) has represented Canterbury and the South Island since 1964. She is an extremely skilful and elusive dribbler, which makes her

very dangerous inside the opposing twenty five, and she is quick to seize opportunities in the circle. Miss A. Judson (Carlton) is a very speedy and enterprising wing who has represented both Canterbury and the South Island. She uses her speed to advantage when she has broken past the opposing half, and her anticipation enables her to cut in on passes on the infield side of the defence. Her centre passes are accurate and timely. With such strong representation in the South Island trial, Canterbury should be well to the fore in the final New Zealand trial and in the New Zealand team.
