School In Shifts

(N.Z. Press Association)

ROTORUA, May 9. Teaching in two shifts a day has been proposed by Bay of Plenty secondary school teachers.

They suggest possible teaching days of 8 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

In compensation for the shorter school day they propose to increase the teaching year to 400 halfdays, compared with the present minimum of 380 half-days.

The Bay of Plenty region of the! PosLprimary Teachers’ Association

passed a remit to this effect from the Nui-a-tia College, of Taupo, at the annual conference today. It was said that a large proportion of the education vote was directed into capital outlay and this could be reduced by more use of buildings and facilities.

Work outside a certain number of hours could be overtime.

With school open longer in the day, pupils could study under nonteaching supervision in better facilities than at home, and this would ease the homework problem.
