Southern Horses May Improve

,f The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON. Two South Island horses, Court Belie and Manana, are likely to improve on their first-day efforts in tomorrow’s Waterloo Handicap at Trentham. Court Belle finished nineteenth in the Gloaming Stakes on Saturday but she hit the running rail near the half-mile when she was improving. C. G. Low, who is in charge of the mare, said yesterday that the injury did not seem to have had any lasting effect. Court Belle moved freely in pace work. Manana ran sixteenth in the Gloaming Stakes but it was his first start beyond seven furlong® since the spring and probably improved him. He has drawn well in the Waterloo Handicap and may be a good deal harder to beat. . The two horses will have the same riders, E. J. Didham on Manana and B. J. Anderton on Court Belle. Segundo has come through his unsuccessful race in the Gloaming Stakes satisfactorily. His connexions have lowered their sights a little and entered him for the Brooklyn Hurdles tomorrow. Segundo won over hurdles last season but this term he has not raced as a jumper. His form before the Gloaming Stakes would be a strong recommendation in a hurdle race, although tomorrow he may find it hard to get near High Society. K. W. Quayle will ride him. Jen Hai, which ran a good race for fourth in the Gloaming Stakes, worked on the course proper, but fog prevented the gallop being timed. He pulled up well. Gayemana, which went with him, also seems little the worse for his run in the Karori Hurdles.

The only fast gallop which oould be timed was an attractive trial by Shire Lass, a two-year-old, and Stone Thrower, a candidate for the Trial Plate. Shire Lass was ridden by G. L. Willetts and Stone Thrower by J. F. Harris. They ran three fur-

longs in 35 4-ssec and finished on terms.

Shire Lass has been beaten three times this season, but she is improving. She has drawn wide in the Courtenay Handicap. Stone Thrower is better off in the Trial Plate and he should go well. Min Flicka was among the many which did pace work. She looks well after her win in the Cuddle Stakes. Dunraven was not asked for much but he appeared to have been improved by his race in the Wadestown Handicap.
