800 Enter Dancing Sections

Dancing sections began yesterday on the second day of the Christchurch Competitions Society’s annual competitions. Girls and boys from under eight to over 19 competed in Highland Flings, Irish Jigs, duo, solo and team tap dances, classical ballet, hornpipes, skipping dances and sword dances. More than 800 entries have been received for the dancing classes. The national dancing judge (Mrs B. Broadbelt, of Hamilton) said this type of dancing was of a very high standard in Christchurch. Interest in tap dancing had revived quite strongly and light variety television programmes had contributed to the revival, said the ballet and tap dancing judge (Mrs C. Aslin, of Wellington). After judging the novice ballet classes, Mrs Aslin said she was pleased with the potential shown and two boys had shown great promise. This was encouraging as it was hard to get boys to take ballet in any number. The standard of piano playing was uniformly good, said the piano and violin judge (Mr K. R. Newson). Piano teaching in Christchurch had always been Kpod and the violin work showed the same good standard of teaching. “There was good resonant tone and technical ability,” he said. Mr Newson said he was disappointed with the playing of the set piece in the 16 and u " <le ' J 8 section. Entrants should have been able to manage it better.

The children’s voices that he had heard so far had shown that teachers were working on the right lines, said the judge of vocal sections (Mr H, Brusey). There was little forcing of the voice and the choice of song was also improving. Some of the performers in the girls’ 12 and under 16 sacred song had chosen adult pieces and their songs suffered because they were unable to sing some of the notes, .he said. The winner of the women’s oratorio class (Margaret McKenzie) had a beautiful sunny quality in her voice, said Mr Brusey. The other singing in this class was of a very high standard. More study of the music they were playing was required, according to the judge of the instrumental section (Mr N. R. Taylor). “The standard was very good and if was a pity there were not more entries,” he said. “A majority of performers, although they showed good ability, did not study their solo enough. General attention to detail was lacking.” Yesterday’s results were:— National Dancing Highland Fling.—Under 10: Alison Howell 1, Jennifer Hoy 2,
