NOT JOINING GROUP

Indonesia Has Other Plans (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) DJAKARTA, May 8. Indonesia had declined to join the Association of SouthEast Asia because of its links with the South-east Asia Treaty Organisation and the United States defence system, the Foreign Minister (Mr Adam Malik) said today. In an interview with the London “Financial Timesquoted by Antara, Mr Malik said Indonesia was backing the formation of a new regional co-operation body, probably to be called Southeast Asian Regional Co-opera-tion, and including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines among its members.

He said the new organisation should deal with regional security as well as economic and cultural co-operation. Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines are member countries of A.S.A., which was formed in 1961 to promote regional co-operation. Thailand and the Philippines are also members of S.E.A.T.O.
