Display Of Ploughs

The agricultural section of the Museum of Science and Industry will have a display of at least 21 historic ploughs at the world ploughing contest this week. From Rangiora to Ashburton, people have been restoring and painting old ploughs. For the last seven months the agricultural section has been working on ploughs and will have nine fully protected against rust and repainted. Some will have new wooden handles fitted to replace those that have rotted. Three old ploughs were given to the museum by the late Mr F. Dunlop, of Turners road, Marshland, who died in January. He also gave many other farming implements and numerous small tools.

Others who have given ploughs which will be on display are Messrs E. R. Kevern (Christchurch), L. Campbell (Pareora), R. W. Fletcher (Otaio), J. Crawford (Kaiapoi), G. P. Griffiths (Tai Tapu), G. L. Kay (Christchurch), and R. Deans (Homebush, Coalgate). Ploughs have been lent by A. Roscoe (Christchurch), M. Thacker (Okains Bay), M. W. Busby (Kaiapoi), I. W. Plaskett (Rangiora), G. N. Fraser (West Eyreton), M. Spencer Bower (Swannanoa), J. Carter (Templeton), C. F. Long (Pendarves), and A. Marshall (Kirwee). The agricultural section committee consists of Messrs

C. J. Crosbie, of the Department of Agriculture, who is chairman, J. S. Dunn, of the New Zealand Agricultural Engineering Institute, who is secretary, and N. Pethig (Young Farmers’ Clubs), B. M. Gillanders (Agricultural

Engineering Club), A. L. Mulholland (Federated Farmers), M. Thacker (Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association), G. G. Lindsay (Lincoln College), and L. W. McCaskill (New Zealand Institute of Agricultural Science).
