AIRCRAFT CHOICE

Anti-British Bias Denied (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 7. The Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) yesterday emphatically denied the existence of anti-British bias among top officials of either the Department of Civil Aviation or the National Airways Corporation. The Minister also refuted suggestions that bias had influenced a recommendation to the Government to buy American aircraft rather than British for the National Airways Corporation. Mr Gordon said the recommendation to buy the Boeing 737 instead of the B.AC. 1-11 was made by the National Airways Corporation and approved by the Civil Aviation Department because it was the aircraft most suited to New Zealand conditions. It was purely a question of which aircraft fitted more closely N.A.C.’s working requirements.
