DISEASE OF BABIES

Brain Damage Likely (N.Z. Pres. Arsn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, May 5. The Asian and Oceanian Congress of Neurology was told this week that children should be thoroughly examined at birth to guard them against brain damage. A spokesman said’ that in some cases a baby might be born with a disorder known as phenylketonuria. If this was not checked early mental retardation could follow.

The disease caused an unusual breakdown in proteins and this breakdown could cause permanent defects to the brain, which could mean a child would be mentally retarded. If the disease was found early the child could be put on a special diet and would grow up normally.
