New York Daily Closed

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) NEW YORK, May 7. A fact-finding study and a Congressional inquiry were suggested yesterday after the disappearance of yei another New York daily newspaper, said the “New York Times.” The “World Journal Tribune” fell victim on Friday to soaring costs, although its circulation had risen 200,000 to 700,000 since It was formed in a merger of the “World Telegram” and the “Sun,” the “Journal-American” and the “Herald-Tribune” on March 21 last year. A statement issued by the management said that the newspaper was losing 700,000 dollars a month. Yesterday, the president of the city council, Mr F. D. O’Connor, suggested a citywide fact-finding study of problems associated with New York city newspapers. The remaining city-wide dailies are the “New York Times” and the “New York Daily News” in the morning, and the “New York Post” in the afternoon. The “World Journal Tribune” had 2600 employees. The Mayor of New York, Mr John Lindsay, was continuing talks with publishers elsewhere to see if anyone would be interested in revlving the "World Journal Tri-

bune,” said spokesmen yesterday. The Mayor still had some hope, “although not very much.” Mr B. A. Powers, president of the Printers’ Union, said he would consult his lawyer on whether and how to proceed with a formal request for a Congressional investigation into the reasons for the closing of the newspaper. The closing was being “unfairly charged” to unions instead of management, he said. Mr M. Meyer, president of the defunct newspaper, said that it was an “irrevocable decision on the part of the owners.”

Just after the announcement that the "World Journal Tribune” was ending publication, the “New York Post” increased its advertising rate 20 per cent, and the "Daily News” raised its price from seven to eigth cents. The “New York Times” did not announce any change. It has a daily circulation of 850,000—but it carries more advertising than any other paper in the world. The Paris-based “New York Herald Tribune-Washington Post” would continue publication unaffected by the closure of the “World Journal Tribune” in New York, said a spokesman in Paris.
