Annual Church Service Of Red Cross Centre

More than 400 members of the Red Cross, members of other charitable societies, parents, and friends attended the annual church service of the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society, at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church yesterday afternoon. The service was conducted by the Rev. D. Hickey and the address given by the chairman of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, the Very Rev. G. V. Daly. “The ideal that we follow in the Red Cross is one of feeling, of love and care for our fellow men,” said Father Daly. “The ideals of the Red Cross found their origin on the first red Cross on Mount Calvary many hundreds of years before Henri Dunant founded the Red Cross Society.”

Ideals, Inspiration, and willingness were needed for the Red Cross Society to succeed in its work.

“There are going to be more and more people whc need our help,” he said. “In spite of our generosity in the past we must continue to broaden our horizons. Let not the little difficulties of today hinder our generosity,” said Father Daly. The parade outside the church had to be cancelled because of rain.

Mr A. L. B. Ross, a former deputy chairman of the North Canterbury executive, read the first lesson. Philip Harding, a junior member of the society, read the second lesson.
