Escaper Caught

Eric James Smylie, aged 28, who escaped from Paparua Prison while working in the vegetable garden about 11 a.m. yesterday, was caught three miles from the prison four hours later. Two Lincoln farmers held him until the police arrived.

Smylie will appear in the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of escaping from lawful custody. Smylie is serving a sentence of nine months’ imprisonment for theft and wilful damage.
