SCHOOL BANDS

First Festival Successful The first Canterbury high schools’ brass band festival held at the Cashmere High School recently had been so successful that it could become an annual event, said Mr S. Hobbs, secretary of the Canterbury Provincial Brass Bands’ Association. An audience of 500 to 600 that included the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) and Mr P. M. Brooker, president of the New Zealand Brass Bands’ Association, had enjoyed the programme provided by bands group items representing nine schools and final items given by a representative band composed of players from all the school bands and boys from two school* that eould not field a band. It was hoped that by showing interest in school bands the association would get a larger percentage of boys joining outside brass bands or other musical groups when they left school, Mr Hobbs said.
