POSTMASTER TO RETIRE

Mr M. E. McGifford, Of Lyttelton

Lyttelton’s postmaster, Mr M. E. McGifford who was born in the port In 1910, will retire on May 31. Mr McGifford was educated at St Joseph’s Convent Lyttelton and later at the Christchurch Technical College. He began his post office career In the port in 1926 and subsequently served in various capacities at Lincoln, Tai Tapu, Palmerston, Miller’s Flat Omakau, Gore, Outram, Otautau. Kaitangata, Kalkoura, Hokitika, New Brighton and Onehunga. He was a supervisor at Onehunga for three years.

His first appointment as postmaster was at Waiuta on the West Coast 18 years ago. He also served as postmaster at Blackball, Orepuki, Roxburgh Hydro, Addington and finally Lyttelton where he returned in 1964. Mr McGifford served with the New Zealand Divisional Signals in the Middle East from 1942 and was wounded in Tripolitania in 1944. He was invalided home aboard tiie Dutch hospital ship Oranje in 1945. Mr McGifford is a keen golfer. He will live in Christchurch.

Two Records.—The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association has approved two national records: 7370 points recorded by R. A. Williams (Auckland) when he won the decathlon title in Jamaica last August, and the 190 ft lOln discuse throw by L. A. Mills (Auckland) earlier this year.
