Three Americans, G. Archer, F. Beard and D. Sikes shared the first round lead with four-under-par 67s in the 115,000 dollar champions international golf tournament at Houston. R. J. Charles, of New Zealand had a round of 72.

Three British players shared the course record of 67—G. B. Wolstenholme, A. Jacklin and E. Jones—in the first round of the Penfold tournament at Blackpool. S. Peach, of Australia, was two strokes behind the leaders. P. W. Thomson had a 70, but other Australians and the New Zealand entry, fared badly. B. Coxon had a 74, T. Wollbank 78, and D. Fearns 79. J. M. Lister, of New Zealand finished on 74 but his countryman, B. T. Boys, scratched.
