Papanui Public Library
Five hundred and ninety-one subscribers borrowed 40,852 books from the Papanui Public Library during the year, according to the report to the annual meeting. Eight hundred and thirty-two new books were put on the shelves, and about 400 old books were disposed of.
Cr. H. G. Hay, who represented the City Council libraries committee, congratulated the members on the work done, and said he was impressed with the number of books issued: He said there was no word of a new library building in Papanui. The secretary of the library, Mrs G. F. King, said that television was not making much difference to the library and that membership was going up. Officers elected were:—
Patron, the Mayor, Mr G. Manning; president, Mr B. Offord; vice-president, Mrs K. A. Hamilton; treasurer, Mr A. J. Hunt; secretary, Mrs G. F. King; committee, Mesdames M. Brown, L. Hawse, M. Burnett, D. Dutton, K. Orton, R. Stringer, J. Evans, G. Anderson, and Mr J, Mackie.
