402gns Average At Waikato

<2Vew Zealand Press Association)

HAMILTON.

Overseas buyers did not work on a very extensive scale at the inaugural Waikato yearling sales in Hamilton yesterday. Nevertheless the sale was quite satisfactory, 70 lots being sold for an aggregate of 28,140 guineas and an average of 402 guineas.

Many of the vendors placed high reserves on their yearlings and many lots were passed in. Late in the sales there was keen interest in a colt by Alcimedes from Lendaum. However, bidding stopped at 1000 guineas. The reserve was 7000 guineas.

Pyne, Gould, Guinness, of Christchurch, acting for a South Island client, paid 1800gns for a bay colt by Test Case from the Lord Bobs mare, Bobsleigh, offered on account of Mr R. G. Chitty, of Manurewa. This youngster, like the ehampion. Galilee, descends from Limelight The top-priced filly of the

sales was a well-developed daughter of Better Honey and Moonee Valley. She made 950gns. A half-sister to Summer Smile, Sumner and Red!mere, all good winners, she was bought by Messrs J. D. and L. D. Georgetti, of Marton. They intend training the filly themselves. They race Wavering and Havering and have found Wavering an excellent investment for the 90gns they paid

for him at a Palmerston North sale of untried stock. A close relative of the champion three-year-old, Star Belle, a colt by Test Case out of Regal Zorra was purchased by Mr A. McKay as agent for the Adelaide trainer, J. B. Cummings, for 1750gns. The youngster was bred by Waikato Racing Club president, Mr F. C. Johnstone. An engineer on the Manapouri power scheme, Mr John Manaut, of the United States, bought two fillies and a colt yesterday. He intends to race them in New Zealand and, if they show good form, he will take them back to America and breed from the fillies. Mr Manaut races the promising Cherokee Brave in the South Island.
