13 New M.P.s To Be Sworn In Next Week

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 19.

Seventy-eight members of Parliament—including 13 new members —will be sworn into office at the opening of the first session of the thirty-fifth Parliament next Wednesday.

Twelve new members won seats at last year’s General Election, and one won a by-election in the Southern Maori electorate in March.

The winners of the by-elec-tibns held at Petone and Fendalton last Saturday will be sworn in at a separate ceremony later in the month. The closing date for special votes in both electorates is not until next Wednesday night. Final results should be announced later that week. After the official opening of

the new session by the Chief Commissioner, Sir Richard Wild (the Chief Justice), the members of Parliament will swear their allegiance to the Crown. The other oath will be administered by the Clerk of the House, Mr H. N. Dollimore. The members will then elect a new Speaker to succeed Sir Ronald Algie, who retired last year. The House is expected to elect the former Chairman of Committees,. Mr R. E. Jack (Govt., Waimarino) as Speaker. On Thursday afternoon, members will be summoned from the Chamber of the House of Representatives to the Legislative Council Chamber to hear the Gov-ernor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) deliver the Speech from the Throne. Later, members will return to the House of Representatives to deal with official administrative business before

adjourning until the following day. The House will meet on Friday morning to pass resolutions of sympathy to the relatives of the late Mr H. Lake (former Minister of Finance), Sir Eruera Tirikatene (Opp., Southern Maori), and Mr M. Moohan (Opp., Petone). The House is then expected to adjourn until the evening of Tuesday, May 2, when Government members will move and second an Address-in-Reply to the Governor-Gen-eral’s Speech from the Throne.

Parliament will probably move on to the introduction of legislation the following day.
