Explanation Of Report

“The church report on ‘Rockers’ as printed in Monday’s paper accurately represents the situation as it appeared to me in December, 1966; it represents the very tentative conclusions of six months’ experience in this field and cannot be regarded as a final word in this very complex question,” said Mr H. J. Marcon, a full-time youth worker at St. John’s Church, Latimer Square, commenting on the publication of his report submitted to the Social Service Council of the Diocese of Christchurch. “The unfortunate rendering of the report in the present tense gives a misleading picture on the state of the work today. The over-all moral standards are not as low as was at first believed and as the mutual trust and understanding between ourselves and the young people has grown, we have a very strong respect for the courageous way many of them are overcoming their difiicult circumstances. We have many good friends among the young people and we regard this as a privilege,” said Mr Marcon.

“In any case the published extracts from the report cover only the more unhappy aspects of the work and no mention was made of the very real response that many have made towards each other, the church and God.”
