Slow-Combustion Stove Installations
While the installation of improved, open fires in older fireplaces does not create many hazards, the fitting of slow combustion stoves of the enclosed type may do if the existing construction is not sound and does not meet the requirements.
The major faults in older Portland cement may tell, chimneys are:— thus creating a fire hazard. Thickness of the Chimney Clearances for Framing Wall it is not unusual in every-
Numerous chimneys have been built in four and a half inch brickwork. Because of temperatures some of the
day construction for strapping or framing to be hard against the chimney breast Whilst this may be satisfactory for an open fire, it
becomes a hazard because of the higher flue gas temperatures associated with slow combustion stoves. Fire Surrounds Many fire surrounds are planted against the chimney breastwork Instead of being rebated into the lintei over the opening. Slight movements result in the exposure of timber framing above the surrounds. This is particularly dangerous, even with an open fire. A thorough inspection should be made to ensure safe, efficient installation.
Brick and day products provide economical, efficient and safe chimneys for either an open fire or slow combustion stove. The first cost is little greater than with other constructions. The final cost may be considerably less from the point of view of maintenance and fire protection.
